Students’ learning in practice: the assessment of social work students and mentors

Review

The characteristics of social work student learning in practice (in organizations providing social services) related to educational and learning environment, evaluation of learning experience and achievements, the competence of practice mentor are discussed in this article. The research was attended by 62 students from Mykolas Romeris University and 46 social workers (students' practice mentors). The research revealed that despite the students and their practice mentors while implementing social work's study programme student learning in practice use objectives and tasks of practice programme, there is the significance in development the cooperative learning which involves into process both students and practice mentors. The experience of students' learning in practice is usually assessed in the end of study practice. Practice mentors assessing students' achievements in practice usually appeal to the supervision of their practice, rarely use personal interviews, reflections, descriptions of students' practice. There is a lack of upholding a constant evaluating – reflecting link between the practice mentor and the student. Social workers are tend to take the role of student practice mentor – educator, but this role is not systemically developed, there is a lack of practice and competence (to guarantee reflective connection, the analysis of practice institutions, the assessment of experience learning in practice and achievements) enabling social workers to develop cooperating learning in practice.
