Art therapy approach practice with social risk families: student’s experience

Art therapy is the process of drawing or painting in the group with the help of which images, associations, fantasies, thoughts, feelings, interpretation of drawings are expressed, professional and unprofessional analysis of these drawings is done that is related to the personality, life and relations system of the author of the drawing. Fine art gives a great possibility to express himself, and for specialist to know the client’s life, to find the opportunity to help him in social activities. Taking into consideration the aspect of practical training of the specialist the students of college are analyzing the method of art therapy mainly in workshops and during professional practice periods. This article presents a qualitative analysis of the research carried out in 2011 that reveals the opinion of students’ of Social Work and Social Education study programmes to practice of art therapy method, difficulties, the importance of workshops and acquired skills useful in professional activities. During art therapy session students worked with different groups during the practice time: with social risk families, with foster families, with children at risk. Students developed the professional skills of monitoring, planning and communication. The difficulties revealed in practical activities are associated with lack of communication skills, lack of experience in group work and lack of ability to fill-in the documentation of art therapy. The research work emphasizes the idea that art therapy is a practical method, and personal practical experience is very important to convey meaning of method and impact of therapeutic activities to client or to group.
